    Standing desks are a workplace trend, with companies that promote standing desks betting it improves employee health and productivity. But in reality, the only thing a standing desk can do is get employees to stand an extra 30-60 minutes a day, with little to no impact on health and productivity.     Some companies promote the use of sit stand desk in the workplace, and the idea behind this is fairly simple, because we know that sitting for too long is bad for your health. At this point, dozens if not hundreds of studies have proven it time and time again. There is no question that sitting a lot and not getting much exercise is bad for your health.


    So, our thinking is, just stand up and work. If you need to sit in front of a computer all day, find a adjustable height desk that can be raised, or one that moves up and down, and work standing up. This would reduce the health risks associated with being sedentary, a major risk factor for health problems among "wage workers".

    As with most health interventions, though, the truth is more complicated than that. While electric standing desk and other standing interventions in the workplace may allow you to stand longer, they may not significantly improve health or well-being.

    Let's look at the evidence
    The first thing to note is that L shaped standing desk (and other standing interventions in general) do make you spend more time on your feet. When I last wrote about this topic in 2018, the research at the time didn't show much impact. Several large, well-conducted trials now show that companies that spend a lot of time and money on standing desks and tell employees to stand as much as possible increase the amount of time their employees stand by 30-60 minutes per day.

    That sounds good, and like I said, sitting is bad for your body, so it's definitely better not to sit. However, things are not that simple.

    The problem is that we don't really care about sitting time itself at all. Being sedentary is what is called a surrogate outcome, a sign of other things that we think are problematic and want to improve. From an employer's perspective, there is some evidence that prolonged sitting can affect productivity and potentially have safety implications. On an individual basis, sitting for too long can lead to worse health conditions, such as weight gain and heart problems.

    We care about sitting because we think it's associated with these long-term risks. By preventing prolonged sitting, we can also prevent other problems, but that's not necessarily true.
